Graphic design is not immune to technology. There was a point in time during the 20th century when graphic artist’s had to type spec in order to determine how type would fit in a brochure, business card or any other printed product. This would result in a mechanical being sent to a printer in order for the brochure, business card or whatever product to be printed. The job of putting together a mechanical was known as a paste-up artist. This is obviously an obsolete profession. It is more obsolete than illustrators are yet during the 20th century, art teachers would consider illustrators less valuable.
Let us not forget that there was a point in time historically where there was no printed text whatsoever and people had to write everything out by hand. The oldest known printed text originated in China during the first millennium AD. The Diamond Sutra from around 868 A.D. is one of the oldest known printed books from the Tang Dynasty in China.
Let us remember that when the idea of computer graphics first started, print graphics programs were used such as Pagemaker, Quark Xpress and InDesign eventually. At that point in time, you could start to bypass type specing and creating mechanicals.
After print became computerized, then came websites, coding and digital advertising. Does this now start to make earlier printing inventions less valuable? I think there will still be a need for print but it is used less as technology keeps marching on.
After websites became available, there seems to be less of a need for hand coding as now with technology there are so many ways to use technology to create code for you.
