This a painting of the Greek Acropolis in oil. The porch of the maidens or what is also known as the Erechtheum (Érechthéion) is seen in the background. The women who stand as columns are known as caryatids.

The significance to me is this is an era of art that helped to promote realism in the arts. I never viewed it as having religious significance.

Unfortunately, my own mother was never very fond of this painting as she considered the ancient Greeks to be pagans. This was a building that was dedicated to the goddess Athena. Poseidon-Erechtheus was also worshipped here. The Erechtheum was most likely built during the 400’s BC.
